Introducing Our Latest Whisky, The Tweeddale Grain of Truth

The Tweeddale Grain of Truth Single Grain Scotch Whisky

The Tweeddale Grain of Truth is our latest Tweeddale whisky, and both refers to our past as blenders and bottlers, and to our future as distillers. The Tweeddale Grain of Truth is a wheat and barley based grain whisky, matured in Bourbon casks and finished in sherry casks. Grain whisky has been traditionally used as a major part of blended whiskies, particularly as a basic base for a blend. We wanted our grain whisky to be more flavoursome than this.

We wanted to create a grain whisky which could be just as full and intense as a single malt Whisky by using 50% barley, and 50% wheat to give the spirit more complexity, and finishing the whisky in sherry casks. In the US, distillers concentrate more on different mashbills to offer different flavours, and this is where we would like to get to. The Barley in the mashbill offers maltiness and mouthfeel, the wheat offers spice and a drying note. Mixed in with rich, fruity sherry notes, this is a complex, warming grain whisky.

The Tweeddale Grain of Truth, Whisky and Fentiman’s Ginger Ale

The original Tweeddale whisky was blended and bottled by Richard Day, our Co-founder Alasdair’s great grandfather. Alasdair inherited the original Tweeddale blending recipes. In the original Tweeddale Blend from the late 1800’s, Alasdair’s great grandfather used sherried grain whisky, so it felt appropriate to create this style again.

At our distillery on Raasay, we are working on producing a grain whisky as well as a malt whisky. This Tweeddale not only shows our past but our aims for the future.

Grain of Truth works on its own, or in a rusty nail with Drambuie. Or just to make a fancy whisky and ginger ale with Fentimans Ginger Ale.
