Introducing Makar’s Malt, a lightly peated dram crafted in collaboration with Scots Makar Jackie Kay for International Women’s Day. This release comes just two months ahead of our signature Isle of Raasay Single Malt release coming out in May 2021.
This single cask, single malt bottling has been matured in one of our signature first fill ex-Bordeaux red wine casks.
Stained red on the outside, these high quality red wine casks are delivered fresh to the island from the châteaux of South West France. Expect bold flavours and fruity blackberry notes.
We are proud to be the first distillery chosen to work with The Scots Makar on an historic single cask release, complete with a specially-written poem.
It is particularly poignant that we are celebrating Jackie Kay’s outstanding tenure as Scots Makar on International Women’s Day, with a single cask bottling from the birthplace of the late Gaelic poet, Sorley MacLean. Poetry and whisky making – two of Scotland’s oldest arts – are a powerful combination.
10% of proceeds from this commemorative bottling will be donated to Glasgow Women’s Library, a charity chosen by Jackie Kay, and which as well as being a lending library, is a treasure trove of an archive about women’s lives dating back to the 1930s.
Jackie Kay Scots Makar said:
“I am so delighted to raise a glass of my very own malt to all the women that have made my life possible on March the 8th, International Women’s day. It is a dream dram come true for me, making some kind of alchemy. Poetry and whisky.”
Here is the wonderful poem that appears on each limited edition Makar’s Malt Scottish Single Malt Whisky.
Here’s Tae Ye
I raise my glass, my dear,
Wherever you now are,
North, south, east or west
Under the nearest or furthest star
Slàinte!
There’s love in this wee dram,
In the purest form
To greet you my fiere, my jo,
Nippy, heathery, warm.
Slàinte!
Jackie Kay
